in the heart of Veynes
The historic center of Veynes: from the Renaissance to the 19th century
The old center of Veynes invites you to discover its heritage through a historical circuit. Admire the Saint-Sauveur church or the Château de la Villette, which now houses the town hall. A route with 20 information panels guides you through the streets, neighborhoods, and history of the old town—download the “Follow the Rail” brochure from the tourist office!
The Saint-Sauveur church, built in the 11th century in Romanesque and Gothic style, has survived the centuries despite the Wars of Religion that partially destroyed it. Rebuilt in 1778, it retains all its charm and peaceful atmosphere.

Chapels, Castles, and Medieval Villages Around the Buëch
The Buëch region is full of architectural treasures to discover during your walks. The Château de Montmaur, a listed Historic Monument, is the jewel of the region. Its construction began in the 14th century, and its layout and decoration span four centuries. Its grand reception rooms have preserved their French-style ceilings and monumental gypsum fireplaces. Each summer, the castle opens its doors for concerts, exhibitions, and performances in a unique heritage setting in the department.
Nearby, the Abbey of Clausonne in the commune of Le Saix is worth a visit: these 12th-century remains are listed as historic monuments and accessible via a beautiful walk through nature. The Chartreuse Notre-Dame de Durbon, one of the first four Carthusian monasteries, and the numerous Romanesque chapels in the area complete this rich religious heritage.

The sundials of the Hautes-Alpes: a unique folk art
The Hautes-Alpes are home to a rare and little-known artistic specialty: sundials. The department has over 400 examples, including 25 in the Buëch region alone. Since each sundial indicates local solar time, each one is a unique creation. Keep your eyes open as you stroll through the villages of the region—they adorn the stone facades of houses and chapels, bearing witness to an ancestral folk craft.
Local Produce: Alpine Traditions and Provençal Influences
The Buëch region is also a land of flavors and traditions. Local markets (every Thursday morning in Veynes, night markets in summer), local products, Alpine cheeses and charcuterie, lavender and Provençal herbs… Veynes is a town accessible by SNCF train station, connected to Marseille and Grenoble—convenient for visiting without a car!
